The root cause of hearing loss can occur along any point of the hearing pathway. To determine whether you’re suffering from hearing loss, arrange to see a specialist today. Alternatively, call our friendly team on 1300 731 710 and we’ll arrange a consultation and assessment at one of our modern clinics across Adelaide and South Australia.

Take a look at the different types of hearing loss below.

Conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss is caused by a problem in the outer and/or middle ear. There are many common causes for this kind of hearing loss, including:

  • Wax blockage
  • Infection (e.g. ‘glue’ ear)
  • Perforated eardrum
  • Otosclerosis – a hereditary condition where bone grows around the stapes bone in your middle ear, making vibrations unable to pass through to the inner ear

These conditions are usually easy to manage because, although they reduce the volume of incoming sound, they don’t affect its clarity. In most cases, you can amplify the sound by simply wearing a hearing aid.

    Sensorineural hearing loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by a problem with the inner ear. There are many common causes for this kind of hearing loss, including:

    • Natural ageing
    • Excessive noise exposure
    • Diseases such as Meniere’s and meningitis
    • Head injury

This kind of hearing loss is more complex because it reduces both volume and clarity of sound. Medical treatment is rarely available, but our experienced audiologists can prescribe a hearing device to suit your specific needs. With a vast range of solutions available, we can boost the volume and clarity of the sounds you want to hear while cutting out what you don’t.

      Mixed hearing loss

Some people may suffer from both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. While these cases can be complicated, the technology available today can still go a long way to restoring your hearing.
